Project Overview
A deteriorating 100’ span box beam bridge built in 1980 over an abandoned railroad right of way was replaced to make way for a new busway road between New Britain and Hartford, CT.
Innovative Construction & Design
A three-stage phase demolition plan was developed to allow Route 175 to remain open during construction. Precast arch units were installed under the existing bridge using a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) vehicle with a special lifting frame.
The new 48’ span accommodates two traffic lanes, a shoulder, and a bike/pedestrian path.
